Hi car lover, I got you. But you didn’t mention the exact car model or the type of the vehicle. So I wrote this article for every type of vehicle whether 17 MPG is good or bad for used cars. So read the whole article carefully. I didn’t but a single word wastes your time. let’s start
Is 17 MPG Good?
Whether 17 MPG (miles per gallon) is good for a used car depends on a few things, but we discuss 4 main points:
- The type of car
- Age and Condition
- How well it’s been taken care of
- And how you drive it.
The Type Of Car
I don’t know which car do you have or want to buy from your friend or someone else. So I divided this types into 2 simple groups.
1. Big Cars
In big cars I sum SUVs and Trucks. So If the car is a big SUV or a truck, 17 MPG might be pretty normal. These big cars usually use more fuel because they’re heavier and have bigger engines. I’ll explain more after this topic.
2. Small Cars
In small cars, I sum Sedans and Compact Cars. If it’s a smaller car, like a sedan or a compact car, 17 MPG is considered low. These cars usually get better fuel mileage, often between 25 to 35 MPG or even more. Use our MPG Calculator to calculate the exact miles per gallon of your vehicle.
Age and Condition
Age and condition are two main factors of car millage. Let’s discus on these two topics.
1. Age
If the car is old, it might not be as fuel-efficient as newer cars. Older cars often have less advanced technology and parts that have worn out over time.
2. Condition
A car that has been well taken care of will run better and use fuel more efficiently. Regular oil changes, clean air filters, and properly inflated tires can help a car get better MPG.
How well it’s been taken care of
If you mostly drive in the city with lots of stop-and-go traffic, 17 MPG might be okay. City driving usually uses more fuel because of frequent stopping and starting. But If you do a lot of highway driving where you can maintain a steady speed, 17 MPG is low. Cars usually get better mileage on highways.
How you drive it / Type of Fuel
Most cars run on gasoline. For a gasoline car, 17 MPG is generally considered low, especially for smaller vehicles. Diesel cars usually get better mileage. If your car runs on diesel and gets 17 MPG, it’s not very good for a diesel engine.
Summary
In short, 17 MPG might be okay for a big, old SUV or truck that you drive mostly in the city. But for smaller, newer cars or cars that you drive a lot on the highway, 17 MPG is pretty low. If saving money on fuel is important to you, you might want to look for a car that gets better mileage. Read our Fuel Efficiency Guide to save more fuel and money.
